The practical-training mobilization meeting for Enrol.-2018 English majors (translation-oriented) of School of Foreign Languages, SDUT was staged at #8-114 on the afternoon of November 18. Yu Zhitao (School’s Deputy Dean), Chen Yujuan (Eng. Dept. Head), Jia Yujie (Faculty Advisor), Liu Xunfang (QUSON’s Deputy General Manager), and Hu Wei (QUSON’s Trans. Dept. Head) attended and shared speeches with students in succession.
Deputy Dean Yu firstly expressed gratitude to QUSON for its long-time supports to the School, and then set forth to students the significance of practical training, defining it as a crucial part for rendering theoretical knowledge into practical know-how as well as a warm-up for their corporate internship in the senior year. He encouraged students to enhance bilingual capabilities, strengthen sensitivities to overseas cultures, intensify pondering and distinguishing during studies, strive to accumulate various kinds of historical and cultural knowledge based on a full understanding and take active part in practice so that the integration of theory and practice can be genuinely achieved and linguistic performances effectively improved.
Following Yu’s speech, the English Department Head Chen continued with an introduction to the schedule of the course, which will be carried out during the 11th – 14th week of this semester and instructed by excellent teachers from SDUT in conjunction with senior translators from QUSON. Participating students shall complete the required document translation tasks and course reports within the prescribed time. She pointed out that the practical training serves as an efficient path of verifying the student’s actual competence in respect of translation, and helps strengthen comprehension of prospective occupational environment, enabling the student to figure out targets of learning and enhance the expertise level.
Translation Department Head Hu of QUSON addressed from another perspective, introducing the current status and tendency of the translation industry, analyzing comprehensive quality requirements and employment threshold of translators, and illustrating the practical application with QUSON’s first-hand project files. Also, he displayed to students QUSON’s history of establishment and growth as well as the processes and types of translation tasks. Under the instructive and communicative atmosphere, QUSON representatives and SDUT students gained in-depth interaction.
On the morning of November 20, Wang Fang (Notarization Translation Principal) of QUSON commenced the very first training course for junior-year English majors of SDUT with notarization-oriented contents, including notarization-related definitions, notarization translation types, do’s and don’ts amidst the translation process, and formats and table-building skills for special files, all with detailed demonstrations. After the class, students’ ardency in asking questions fully manifested their strong initiative of learning and dense interest in exploration.
